Beer Signs Are NOT Home Decor

Beer Sign

A few weeks ago I posted about having our very own house that was ours.  Not his and then ours.  Not a house filled with his stuff and my stuff tucked away in a very crowded closet that was slowly creeping out and taking up what used to be his space, but a home that was truly OURS. I may have mentioned a giant sign in the previous house before I came along that has since been banned from our home.  And I may have described it as a giant four foot tall light up sign in the shape of a Coors Original Beer Can.  Yes, this can is still around and every once in awhile I run across it.  How could I not?  So this time, I took a picture for your viewing amusement. It isn't plugged in and you can't even see the cord in this picture, but trust me, there is a cord and it does light up. I don't claim to be a home decor genius.  In fact, I openly admit, I'm home decor challenged.   In fact, I have to admit there's something some may consider a decorating faux pas that still … [Read more...]

The Day Spam Rang My Doorbell

I only heard the very end of the conversation.  Great, who's coming to our house at 6:30 on Thursday?  And did you clear this with me first? Most of the time, my husband catches on to things before I do.  He's the one that always explains the joke I didn't get on the way home.  That way my face doesn't turn bright red in public.  He is the last to be so trusting.  He's the first to suspect something fishy.  So why didn't he see this coming before me? I tried to convince him something wasn't quite right. When he got off the phone, he told me we would be having some company on Thursday at 6:30.  And it'll take about 30 minutes. Really, who? Some people we hardly know who we haven't talked to in months.  I would call them acquaintances but friends of someone who may or may not be related to us.  And this acquaintance called my husband's cell phone, not the landline.  So how did he get his cell phone number?  Let's just say, this was my first red flag. A … [Read more...]

What Did I Get Myself Into?

I was always a renter.  I always lived in apartments or townhouses.  I was a single, white, female.  This suited me very well.  I had no children.  So I didn't need much room.  I didn't have to worry about fixing anything or even lighting my furnace.  It was all done for me.  When my refrigerator quit, I called the landlord.  When the toilet overflowed, I called the landlord.  This really did happen to me less than 24 hours after I took the keys.  Not pleasant, but not really my problem. Then I met my husband.  Not a renter.  Renting was a way of life for me, however, to him, it was a temperary fix until you could find a house to buy.  It was short term in his brain.  By the time, we got married he had been a home owner twice already.  It was just a given that I would get rid of my apartment and move in with him when we got married.  No discussion necessary.  Simple, right?  No...... We didn't discuss any of the moving details.  I had in my mind what would … [Read more...]

A Word of Caution Before You Clean Your Microwave

I had been reading a rather thick book about green cleaning.  I'm not going to tell you the title of the exact book because I thought it was a good resource and I did get some good things from this book.  It just so happens I'm not writing about those today.  I also think that lots of green cleaning uses vinegar, this was not the author's original idea so why blame her for my disaster and drag her name through the mud, right?  So she will remain nameless. I thought this sounded like an easy way to clean my microwave. You put two cups of vinegar in the microwave and then wipe clean.  Notice there is not a given time or power setting.  But it still sounds easy enough.  I decided to multi-task and run the microwave while I'm cooking lunch.  I put two cups of vinegar in and start the microwave on high for one minute.  I stir my lunch while the microwave is running.  I might also add that I have one of those microwaves mounted above my stove.  So while stirring … [Read more...]
