A Little of This and That

DSC_0325

So I've been a little MIA lately. I've been busy. And sick. And a lot has gone on and I just cannot keep up. On Thanksgiving Day I got sick.  I haven't been sick since I left the classroom.  It was terrible.  And since I don't normally get sick, I took it hard.  It was very hard for me to rest.  It was very hard for me to even accept that I was sick at all really.  It was possibly the worst sore throat I've ever had.  Yet it wasn't strep.  Go figure.   I started feeling better until Christmas Day and once again I realized I was really sick.  Finally, I went to the doctor.  Yes, I won't tell you how many weeks I let this drag on before I wen to the doctor, but it was a lot. But despite being under the weather.  I got a lot done.  There was a lot more to be done.  Nothing like a nasty cold to help you scale back on Christmas. We got the important things squeezed in.  Like gingerbread house making. Missy sealed her gingerbread house up tight … [Read more...]

Workboxes

In my life this week… My husband has worked some very long hours this week... Meaning I haven't had a whole lot of adult conversation. I also much admit, I'm not feeling very motivated.  Dinners are sucking.  Big time. The dinner issue could be a combination of dinner for two and the lack of a dishwasher.  Yes, last Thursday my dishwasher quit.  It was installed on July 10.  So we are well within the warranty period.  The repair guy came, but only had more bad news. I'm without a dishwasher for at least a week while waiting for parts.  How I wish for a magic wand! In our homeschool this week… We have been working on All About Reading.  I really like it.  I think we have got a routine down a little better.  We should by now, right?  We are splitting our lessons into two sessions.  We do a quick review on the second day before starting the second half of the lesson.  This works for us.  Each time whether we finished a complete lesson or just half of one, … [Read more...]

September 14, 2012   In my life this week… I went to the dermatologist last week for a plantar wart on my foot.  Ya, this might be TMI.  However, so many times we skip over those little things that are gross and we just don't want to think about.  So I'll give you just a tiny bit of TMI.  Sometimes we need to know we are not alone.  I promise to skip the pictures.  So I tried and I tried to get rid of this wart without any success.  Although the doctor seemed to think my efforts were not wasted.  After all, I did manage to keep it from spreading or getting any bigger.  So...this was my first visit ever to a dermatologist.  Not as scary as I thought. Generally, a plantar wart will disappear on its own within two or three years.  Ya, not so in my case.  Now that I have a little girl, who finds that spot on my foot interesting, I thought it needed to go.  I tried every OTC treatment.  Nothing.  I even tried some-crazy-as-it-sounds, but might work ones like duct … [Read more...]

Beef, It’s What’s For Dinner

It doesn't get any better than this.

We bought half a cow. The first time we only bought a quarter.  I expected to get twice as much meat.  However, it was much more than twice the amount of meat. The best part...it was less than twice the price. I've learned a lot, unfortunately the hard way, about purchasing meat locally...So I thought I'd share. The first thing I figured out the hard way was timing.  It's seasonal.  I was ready for more meat before the farmers were ready.  So you need to check around.  Word of mouth is good way to find a beef to buy.  Contact them as soon as you hear they sell beef.  Some will have a waiting list they can put you on which may mean a wait for more than a year.  Some will put your name on a beef and you'll have to wait for them to fatten up, which could end up being just a few months.  Make sure you ask when the beef will be ready.  If you've missed out make sure you find out when you need to put in your order the next time.  In our area it is typically January … [Read more...]

Things I Never Thought I’d Say

Being a mother has changed what comes out of my mouth. Every time we go in a public bathroom, "Don't touch anything." And thirty seconds later, "Didn't I say not to touch everything?" And at least once a day, "No more jumping on the couch." My child loves to pretend to be various animals.  While she is her animal of choice, she wants to be called that particular animal. Me: "Okay, Honeybun.  Get in the car. Her: "Not a Honeybun.  I'm Miss Lizard."  (In the most pouty and hurt tone.) Me: " Okay, Little Lizard.  Get in the car." Her: "Not Little Lizard, Miss Lizard." By now she's thoroughly offended as her feet are planted firmly.  How could she have such an insensitive mother?  Okay let me try again to get it right.  Exactly right. Me: "Miss Lizard would you please take your seat in the car?" And Miss Lizard ever so slowly moves towards the car.  Her movements are hardly noticeable.  Oh, pleeeeease. I can feel my sanity slowly slipping … [Read more...]

The Second Time I Met Him

Wedding Me

In honor of Valentine's Day, I thought I would continue our story of how I met and ended up marrying my husband.  There are two other parts....Love At First Sight and He Really Is Prince Charming.  To read in chronological order, you may want to read Love at First Sight first and Prince Charming last. I had three weeks off for Christmas and decided to go to my parent's for the entire time.  Crazy I know.  It was my last week visiting when the neighbor invited me to dinner.  The same neighbor that had invited me to a cookie party four years before where I met my now husband for the first time.  I declined when I realized she was trying to set me up.  You see it had been quite a long time since I had dated.  I had decided there was nothing worth dating out there.  So I wasn't interested in her sneaky blind date.  And neither was he.  I guess that would make us even. After turning her down more than once, she finally called and told me that he couldn't come because he … [Read more...]
